The key job roles of an oil well drilling engineer are:
- Expertise in field studies and ability to implement innovative designs and technology in order to maximize the outcome.
- Analyze and develop methods to enhance performance and optimize efficiency.
- Identify and implement the best available methodologies for enhancing safety and technical efficiencies. The engineer may be required to prepare relevant contracts, proposals and tenders for the same.

- Completion fluids, drilling cuttings disposal, Working knowledge of large volume well designs, drill string, simple casing design and BHA designs for directional and horizontal wells.
- Expertise in design and execution of wellness programs for vertical, horizontal, directional, and re-entry wells for both – development and exploration.
- Investigate any failures and use corrective measures for amendments.
